Augustine, the bishop of Hippo Regius (North Africa), is incensed by the Donatist practice of rebaptising converts, even the presbyters and bishops. Augustine, "On the Only Baptism", AD 410/411.

[...] Cum eos suscipimus [...] nec eum ipsum errorem suscipimus, quo baptismum Christi etiam apud haereticos regula ecclesiastica custoditum nolunt agnoscere, audent destruere, non dubitant iterare; quin etiam non solum laicos, sed et clericos nec quoslibet clericos, uerum et presbyteros et episcopos, etsi in illis ecclesiis baptizati sunt, quas ipsi apostoli labore proprio fundauerunt, si aliquo modo seductos ad se transferre potuerint, catechumenos faciunt. 19. [...] When we accept them, [...] we do not accept their error. It is because of this error that they do not want to acknowledge the baptism of Christ that the ecclesiastical rule guards even with the heretics; they dare to destroy baptism, they do not hesitate to repeat it; they make catechumens not only of the lay, but even of the clerics, and no matter what clerics, but even presbyters and bishops (even those who were baptised in the Churches that were established by the work of the Apostles themselves!), if they somehow manage to seduce them to come to their side. [...]
