Augustine, the bishop of Hippo Regius (North Africa) recounts his dispute (as a presbyter) with Fortunatus, a Manichaean presbyter (AD 392). Augustine, "Retractions", AD 426/427.
Book 1, Chapter 16

1. Eodem tempore presbyterii mei contra Fortunatum quendam Manicheorum presbyterum disputaui, qui plurimum temporis apud Hipponem uixerat seduxeratque tam multos, ut propter illos ibi eum delectaret habitare. [...] Sed consequenti die tandem confessus est, nihil se aduersus nos inuenire quod diceret, nec sane catholicus factus est, sed tamen ab Hippone discessit.

(ed. Mutzenbacher 1984: 51)
Book 1, Chapter 16

1. At the same time during my presbyterate I had a debate with a certain Fortunatus, a presbyter of the Manicheans, who had lived a long time at Hippo and had led so many astray that, because of them, he enjoyed living there. […] But on the next day he finally admitted that  he could find nothing to say against us. He did not become Catholic, to be sure, but he did leave Hippo.
