DRAFT The Latin inscription commemorating the renovation of the tombs of the martyrs Protus and Hiacynthius by the Presbyter Theodore. Rome, late 4th c.
Aspice descensum, cer]nes mira[bi]le fact[um.
sanctorum monumenta ui]des [pat]efact[a sepu]lchris.
martyris hic Proti tumul]us iacet adque Yachinti,
 quem cum iam dudum te]geret mons, terra, caligo,
5 hoc Theodorus opus const]rucxit presbyter instans,
 ut domini plebem opera] maiora tenerent.
Look at the descent: you will see a marvelous piece of work:
you see the monuments of saints shown in the tombs.
Here lies the tomb of Protus and Hyacinthus;
The hill had long hidden it in the earth and in the darkness
presbyter Teodor conscientiously built this complex,
that the spacious interior may house the Lord's people.
