The inscription - one verse in hexameter - was inscribed on a marble tablet. It was found in the 15th century by Maffeo Vegio (see his De rebus antiquis, book 4, 111, ed. Della Schiava 2009: 113) in the vicinity of the Basilica of Saint Peter, in the sepulchral area, probably the coemeterium ad Circum on the via Cornelia. Possibly it was originally associated with a funerary chapel. Today the inscription is lost.
