Prebyters John and Deacon Epictetus travel from Constantinople to Rome (and back) to inform Pope Celestine I about the deposition of Nestorius and ordination of Maximianus as the new bishop of Constantinople. Letter 22 of Pope Celestine I, "Tandem malorum", Rome, AD 432.

2. Una igitur eademque relatione per filios nostros religiosos et Deo amabiles viros Joannem presbyterum et Epictetum diaconum deiectionem iustam, et exaltationem didicimus iustiorem. [...]
 
7. [...] Hanc autem sollicitudinem nostram praesentes probarunt Deo amabiles filii et charissimi atque animis nostris acceptissimi Joannes presbyter et Epictetus diaconus, quos reversos ad vos festinato remisimus, sollicitius hoc agentes, ut quos diebus Dominicae nativitatis accepimus, resurrectionis Domincae tempore rederemus.

2. We learned about the just deposition [of Nestorius] and even more just exaltation [of Maximianus] from our sons, religious and beloved by God, Presbyter John and Deacon Epictet. [...]
 
7. [...] Our solicitude for the Church could have been witnessed by the most beloved, dear and close to our hearts Presbyter John and Deacon Epictetus, whom we are sending back immediately to you so that we give back for the time of the Lord's Resurrection those whom we have accepted for the days of the Nativity of the Lord.

The information about the travel of John and Epictetus to Rome and back to Constantinople is repeated in the letter of Celestine I to Bishop Maximianus (Letter 24,3; Patrologia Latina 50, 548).
